One of the leading actresses of South Indian film Industry, Kavitha Manoranjini alias Urvashi was born on 25th January 1967 in Kerala. He has two elder sisters Kalpana and Kalaranjini, who are also film personalities. She was 14 years, when she started her career in Tamil film Mundanai Mudichu. Her excellent portrayal of an illiterate village girl, who falls in love with the school master, drew the attention of the audience. Her perfect histrionics and dialogue delivery made her a sought out actress. She made remarkable roles in Malayalam films. Through a wide variety of roles she did in Malayalam films such as Kazhakam, Thalayanamanthram, Bharatham, Kadinjool Kalyanam, Narayam, Kakkathollayiram , Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu and Mukhachithram, she proved that she was undoubtedly one of the finest actors Malayalam cinema had ever produced. She has also been one of the most durable of Malayalam heroines.
She had donned variety of roles be it the uniformed school girl of Yuvajanotsavam, the aristocratic and tragedy-stricken beauty of Mizhineerpookkal, the graceful wife torn between the jealousy of her husband and the respect of his brother, an innocent servant maid in Vanaja Girija, a timid executive in , a talkative village girl in Ettupatti Raasa, etc. Above all these she has never been a glamour girl. She is known for her subtle, understated, classical facial expressions.
She gave incredible performances in Kannada films like Shravana Banthu, Jeevanadi, Kothigalu Saar Kothigalu, Yaarige Saalathe Sambala, Raama Shaama Bhama, etc. She is an excellent actress who excels in all type of roles. Her portrayals in the Telugu films differentiated her from the stereotypic glamorous heroine characters. She made notable roles in Telugu films which include Swarabhishekam, Sandade Sandadi, Chettu Kinda Pleader, and Rustum. She made a come back after a small break as Chandramathi,an illiterate housewife who leaves her husband as she thinks he is attracted to another woman and also leaves her children behind with him in the megahit Malayalam film Achuvinte Amma. She won many accolades for excellent portrayal.
She got divorce from her husband actor Manoj K Jayan in 2008. They have a daughter Tejalakshmi.
She received Kerala State Best Actress Award for films Mazhavilkavadi, Varthamanakalam, Thalayanamanthram, Kadinjool Kalyanam, Kakkathollayiram, Bharatham, and Mukhachitram, and Kazhakam, and Madhu Chandralekha. She received National Award ,Best Supporting Actress Award for the film Achuvinte Amma in 2006. She received Best Actress Special Award for film Mahalir Mattum in 1994. She received Kalaivanar Viruthu from Tamil Nadu Government.
